About the Group

A critiquing group for those who are interested in prayer and story in conversation with sacred texts. If you're interested in joining, please send a message in which you:

  1. Name three of your favorite poets.
  2. Submit three poems.
  3. Talk a little about your experience with critiquing processes.

This group will follow a critiquing process that I learned at a Tin House Writer's Workshop years ago. It really only has three parts. First the group spends some time commenting on what the poem is about. Then they speak to its strengths. Then they help to make the poem stronger by suggesting changes. The only other important part of the process is that the person who wrote the poem stays silent until the end of the critique, when they're free to offer their own comments. I find it very powerful to stay silent in this way when being critiqued, since it allows me to hear the reader-response and reveals whether I'm actually conveying what I want to convey in the writing.
