About the Group
Gabrielle Pullen, MFA. I write fiction because it's incredibly satisfying. I got really excited while discovering the pedagogy of teaching writing. Who knew there was such a wealth of study and experience in composition studies about how writing helps us become better thinkers, more true to our own thinking and how it becomes a skill for lifelong learning and engagement. I loved talk about the craft of fiction. As a longtime meditation and somatic movement instructor, I love the overlap between narrative and how we make sense of experience. I find this takes our writing to another level.
The global organization, Shut Up & Write (SU&W) was founded in 2007 in San Francisco. It was created by science fiction writer Rennie Saunders, who recognized that many writers struggle to maintain a consistent writing routine. He launched the first chapter at Crossroads Cafe, committing to a weekly meeting with one simple rule: Shut Up and Write! This straightforward approach quickly resonated with writers looking for support and accountability. I have been running a group since 2018, the current iteration since 2019.
Any kind of writing welcome: ""If you want to write... ✒ write more. If you want to get better at expressing yourself, ✒ all you have to do is keep writing."
Join the group for details about meetings. We are a wee, free group that creates a structure for you to have weekly time with scheduled writing.
Here's how it works: When You Work Alone, You Need Structure. We Help You:
✒ 1. Carve Out Time.
Brief Meet & Greet: Where are your from & What is your INTENTION for today's session? (Morning pages? Character analysis? Coherence Edits? or Writing a chapter or a page? A poem or a memoir?)
Notice How: When you set your intention first, your subconscious drives your choices!
✒ 2. Get Cracking.
To follow through: We write for an hour in silence.
✒ 3. Make It Sustainable.
Post-Writing Session Debrief Fosters Meta-Learning: What worked? What was unexpected? Was that a lame distraction to eliminate? Or, by some chance, did you stumble upon something really helpful? (What is your writing style in terms of how you organize your work? Are you cognizant of the fact that pre-writing may consist of writing, but not necessarily? Do you work better with music or paintings or a particular atmosphere to set the mood? Do you, like some writers, get into character before you begin?)
