About the Group
Welcome. The concept for this group is simple: We produce fiction--stories and/or novels--and meet to critique the work we produce every two weeks (currently the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 5 pm ET). In addition to constructive feedback on style, plotting, etc. we would share experiences/tips on agents, submissions, and publications. We'd also of course recommend favorite writers and works. Originally the concept was to meet in person, but there are four members scattered around the country as of Jan. '26 so I'm starting the group virtually for now.
I have found that having deadlines and accountability via writing partners is great for all parties, and this group will do that. For that reason, we will stick to the group schedule (every 2 weeks for 1.5-2 hours) regardless of whether one member can't make it. And I would expect members to send feedback directly to writers who've submitted work for that meeting whether or not you attend (yes, I expect a commitment in time and effort--please look for another group if you don't like that concept).
My taste in stories gravitates toward Sam Lipsyte, Julio Cortazar, Borges, and Charles Bukowski. I love the novels of J.G. Ballard, Raymond Chandler, Celine, Paul Beatty, Don DeLillo, Thomas Bernhard, Henry Miller, and Patrick Modiano. But I’m open to most styles of short and long fiction. And I would definitely encourage people to try out new things here.
About me: I’m a longtime writer (English major, short stories, journalist) with a environmental nonprofit day job who recently finished polishing my first novel, a noir set in Panama. So I need to start querying and would love tips. I’ve also begun writing stories again, stories that I hope to workshop. Meanwhile, I have the start of a second novel, and I would like to move toward a complete draft. I don’t expect everyone joining to have a long list of publishing credits, but I do expect workshop/group experience (I shouldn't have to explain the basics of feedback, group etiquette etc.) and a seriousness about your work--and the work of other group members.
If you'd like to get to work with us, message me with a little bit about yourself--and what you want out of the group--and I will be in touch soon. Thanks!
